Developed Cultures – Lesson Learned from South Korea

South Korea, a small country located between China and Japan, is one of the developed countries in the world with some of its brand, such as Samsung and LG, are nowadays leading the world in technology. With GDP per capita around 25,000 US dollars in 2007, it now becomes one of countries with the fastest development since 40 years ago. Compared to Indonesia, which at that time already had a luxurious Senayan football stadium and was able to hold ASIAN Games, South Korea at the same time was still a poor country with large number of people died because of hunger and cold.

Question arises here, how could this country change dramatically – from the country whose economic condition was worse than ours into one of the important developed countries in the world, from which Indonesia is far behind? Before answering that, I want to give some facts about this country. South Korea, just like Japan, has very little amount of natural resources. It even has to import 98% of its energy needs. The price of gasoline there is also quite expensive, around 2 US dollars a litre. These shows that its nature is not the one making it developed like now and thus, the reason behind this is no doubt, people.

seoul-gyeongbokgung

South Korea is perhaps one of the countries whose citizens are the most hardworking people in the world. They work professionally as if they have to do it, otherwise they would die. It did happen in the past – around 60’s – when many people in South Korea died because they had no money to buy food or proper living equipments to protect them from cold during winter. “If I don’t work hard, I will die” is deeply held in its entire people.

The same thing goes to the students. The educational system in South Korea is the second best in the world and it is achieved by hardworking. Their slogan is also quite similar, “If I don’t study hard, I can’t get good work. If I don’t get good work, I will die.” Library in the university is the busiest building. In some universities, it is even opened 24 hours due to large demand from the students to study. They study there the whole time – especially when the exams week comes. When I was living in South Korea, I often went to downtown during weekend either to buy some stuffs or just hanging around. Downtown in South Korea, just like in big cities in Indonesia, is usually crowded with people during weekend. However, there was one time that when I went there, it was so quite. There were only few people walking there. When I asked my Korean friend about this, he told me that the following week was the National Examination week, so almost all the students were busy studying at home.

Education is one of the most important sectors in South Korea. The people give very high respect to teacher, lecturer, and other educational staffs. The average income of the professor in the university is about twice the GDP per capita or around 50,000 USD a year. This shows that South Korea has really good attention in this sector since this is the main sector related with human resources. It is totally opposite with the situation in Indonesia, in which the lecturer average income is not much different with Indonesian GDP per capita (3,700 USD) or about 4,000 – 5,000 USD a year.

snsd

Discipline is another characteristic of South Korean people. Do not dare to make promise with Koreans and then come late – I experienced this before. I made appointment to meet a Korean friend at 7 am in the morning. I came at 7.03 (three minutes late) and he was already gone – leaving me. If you have a class between 9 am to 12 pm, then be ready to sit in the whole time (exactly three hours). The lecturer will come on time and will not finish the class before time. If you buy train ticket and it says that the train will arrive in destination at 15.23, then it will arrive at that time.

What can we conclude from the explanations before? That becoming a developed country is not about how we can build hi-tech facilities in many sectors. Indeed, it is about how we take the developed value into our culture. It is still rare to find people with hardworking, willingness to study and educate, discipline, and other developed cultures in our country. Even if there is, the situation makes it looks weird. It is common to see a class filled with only few students at 8 am even though the class should be started at 8 am. It is common also to start meeting at 15.30 although it is supposed and mentioned before to start at 15.00. And it is not a taaboo thing to watch movies from the Internet during work time.

South Korea does not become a developed country in an instant. It is not a direct gift from God that nowadays their people in general can live more prosperous with more developed stuffs than us. It is because they wanted to be developed. Do not see how they now have good living. See how they achieve their good living instead. If we have all of the developed values mentioned before as our cultures, being a developed country is not a big matter.

Thus my question here is simple, do we want to be developed?

25 things….

Why 25? Next I’ll make a 100.

RULE: Once you’ve been tagged you are supposed to write a note with 25 random things, facts,  habits or goals about you. At the end, choose 25 people to be tagged. You have to tag the person who tagged you. If I tagged you it’s probably because I want to know more about you or just see how silly you can be.

[To do this, go to "Notes" under tabs on your profile page, paste these instructions in the body of the note, type your 25 random things, tag 25 people(in the right hand corner of the app) then click publish.]

1. I like math (and I think I am quite good at it hehe). When I am on the way to go somewhere and seeing numbers, I will count them automatically and judging whether the result is divided by 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 16, or so on (why these numbers? just think, it is mathematically proven, haha).

2. I like to eat almost every food that I can (well I cant eat pork, dog meat, and so on since I am muslim), and I can eat really fast, faster than all the people that I met. I think my eating ability is almost as good as my math ability hahaha… That’s why I am so disappointed when the Gokana Teppan challenge was already over before I even tried T_T

3. I like to go to new places. Everytime I read National Geographic or browse the Internet and find some beautiful scenery images (waterfall, mountain, snow, lake, and so on), I will spend a lot of time wondering and promising to myself that I will go there someday.

4. Acropolis, Greece, is the place I want to visit the most in the world since I was in high school, since at that time I was only an inch (or even milimeter) of getting there.

5. I really value friendship. I made many promises with many friends that we will meet again in the future, whatever the condition is.

6. I want to take my master and doctor degree at USA since in my mind it is the best country to study in the world. When I talk about it, I mean the best institute in USA, which is Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Can I? Well I have to believe myself that I can. ^^

7. I started to love Korea when I went to Korea, and now I love it more. I want to study the Korean language more. I also like and know many korean sings and singers – even more than some of my Korean friends hehehe.

8. My name is quite difficult to say, either “Fajrin”, “Rasyid”, or “Muhamad” (with two M’s, not 3 as many people’s). It makes me have many nicknames (bevi, bofi, and so on). However, I still prefer people calling me my real name. ^^

9. I am really difficult to cry. Before December 27, 2008, I didnt remember when the last time I cried (However, I cried a lot that day).

10. I like to read almost all the books (fiction/non fiction, science/humour, comic/novel, and so on). I am reading while I am in the transportation mean or waiting for someone.

11. I am not talkative. However, I dont know why everytime my friends always push me to become class leader / representative which makes me have to speak in public.

12. I cannot stand if things are not organized. I think my room is cleaner than most of the girls’ hehehe.

13. I wonder why Korean girls are so pretty but after I went there, I know that some of them did the plastic surgery. However, there are still some of them which is naturally extremely beauty and I really admire them.

14. My favourite snack is “cilok” – a snack made of aci (I don’t know the english name for that), especially cilok near Istana Plaza, Bandung. It is so delicious and added with chicken or beef. I can even spend 5000 – 10000 rupiahs just for buying that in one time.

15. I love blue the most. I always wonder if there is natural food or drink whose colour is blue. Blueberry is not really blue anyway.

16. I always want to stay in Indonesia – despite living in other countries seems overall nicer. But home is always home sweet home.

17. I do not want to have big house. Instead, I want to have small house with a very big garden/park on which I can lay myself.

18. I always try to think positively and am not easy to get angry. Even some of my friends purposely tried to make me angry.

19. I can not easily forget everything I ever memorized. Do not your give your password / secret thing to me, because I will remember it forever.

20. I think I watch too many superhero movies when I was kid since I often consider myself different from others and meant to do something big for my country or even in the world.

21. I always think about every possibility related time machine. Up until now, I still think that going to the future is possible, but to the past is not.

22. I do not like people being late. If you say you can come at 1, then do it. If you think you can’t, then don’t say that.

23. I am hoping that my two little sisters (which are still in high school) will be able to enter universities they chose.

24. I am not everytime missing my family, but it doesn’t mean that they are not my priority. In fact, I will prioritize my family more than any people in the world.

25. I am doing my final project nowadays. I hope I can finish that to achieve my next target : valedictorian.

Who did I tag? See at my facebook, hehe.

Resolution after Pause Life

Since it is still the first month, I think it is not that late if I write what I wanna achieve this year. Resolution, this is the term used by many people to indicate that – usually made when special moments happen or something changes. Quite common examples are birthday, new year, graduation, and so on. Here first let me tell you what the meaning of this year – 2009 – is for me. I consider 2009 as year of pursuit.

Yeah, what do I need to pursuit anyway? Simply stated, life. As you guys know, I just finished 10 months (2 semesters) student exchange program to Daejeon University, South Korea. It was like the biggest experience I ever had in my life. Extremely said, it seems like I lived in other world during that time. From March 27, 2008 (the time when the student exchange program started – when I went to Korea), I was pausing my life to enter totally different life and just resumed my real life on January 3, 2009 (when I came back to Indonesia).

traffic-light-scuplture-from-thisisbrokencom

The reason why I declare that program as living in different world with no connection with my real life will be explained in other post. Here I state that I really didnt regret join that program. As stated above, I experienced many wonderful things I wouldnt experience here. However, it had consequences. The fact that I have to pause my life means that Icouldnt achieve almost all that at first I wanted to achieve last year, for example – probably the most obvious one – I first wanted to graduate last year (2008), but now I am still struggling with my final project.

car-chase

Finally, in this year, I have to pursuit all that I wanted to achieve before – after 10 months break. Starting with the resolution, here they are:

  • Graduate

This perhaps is the most intolerable – but also the most challenging – thing I want to achieve this year. Since I just started my final project this month (I couldnt do when I was in Korea), therefore graduate this year means that I only have 4 months and 3 weeks (since I wrote this post) to do my whole final project. Even I only need to take 1 other course beside this (Distributed System course), but I dont think It will be easy. I will focus all my first half year time for achieving this – sincerely need pray for all of you ^_^

  • 100 % Financially Support My Own Life

Yes, I also cannot tolerate this. As my parents get old, I become more worried about them. Almost achieving retire age, and it only means one thing. Soon it will be my turn – to at least support my own life, and also my family (parents and two younger sisters). Last year I also announced this, but I couldnt totally fulfil it. I supported my own life for about 75 % in 2007, and it increased to about 90 % in 2008. Still not enough, I think. I want it to be 100 % this year, so by this year I can start to help my parents to fulfil family need. Especially, one of my sisters will enter college this year – means more money are needed. How will I do that? Well, it is related to the next one, hehe. I want to get master scholarship by the end of this year, but it means that I will go abroad next year. Therefore, I will spend one year working – means getting paid while getting experience ^_^ – as soon as (or even before) I graduate.

  • Studying at Top of The World

As time goes on, I become more and more addicted in achieving this dream. At first I just want to study abroad. But after I experienced student exchange program to Korea last year, my dream changed. Not just study in other country – well I already did that. Now I want to study at top of the world. It is still in other country though :D . What does it mean? Simple. I want to study at MIT. What do you think? Some said that it is too much for me, and some other said that I can do it. I don’t know which one is correct, whether I can or not, but I remember what Henry Ford said, “If you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right”. So? Nothing I can do except believe that I can. I will spend my first half year (well, in addition to do my final project) to gather as much information as possible about this, and my second half year to prepare for that. So, MIT, I will go there summer next year.

  • Reduce Weight

Hahaha, this is just like the financial support thing. I announced this by the beginning of last year, but I havent still achieved it. However, most of the people I met nowadays said that I am slimmer that before, which means that I am getting nearer to my ideal weight (For your information, for a 170-cm man like me, my ideal weight is between 58 to 70). Since I am not in that area yet, don’t ask me how much is my weight now, okay?

There they are. My resolution for this year-of-pursuit. My resolution which I made after paused and postponed my life for around 10 months. The reason why I put those here is simple, I need help – motivation and pray – from all of you. I hope that I can fulfil all of them, and thank you for your help ^_^

Change

Yes, change. No no, I am not Obama’s big fan. And not because of the Obama’s inauguration yesterday that I put that word as the title of this post – You guys have already read so much about that, haven’t you? I just wanna change, at least for myself. Everything changes, we know that – even the non living things. That’s why, what I mean by change here is change for better.

Change through this blog, as well. So sorry for forgetting this blog for around 4 months. So may things happened – And I will tell you everything soon. Hope I’ll be able to put all my minds through here from now on. See ya! ^^ ~

Kegembiraan Itu Masih Berlanjut

Giving each other between friends is probably one of the most beautiful things in the world. Treasure it, because it probably isthe one that will always remain in your heart until the time comes…

Unforgettable Birthday

Setuju? Saya bersyukur kepada Allah, karena ulang tahun saya beberapa hari lalu – yang saya pikir akan terjadi biasa-biasa saja karena saat ini saya sedang berada jauh dari sebagian besar lingkungan (keluarga, dia, dan teman-teman) saya – membuat saya merasa sangat berharga bagi sekeliling saya, thanks for all the surprise dude… ^^.

You’re too early, stupid Cyrus“. Hahaha, its okay, guys, senang sekali memakan pancake itu bersama-sama ^^.

Kamis, 11 September 2008

Bagaimana surprise party nya?
saya : Surprise party apa?
Lho katanya teman-teman mu menyiapkan surprise party untukmu?
Lho kamu tidak tahu ya? Ng… lupakan apa yang aku bilang ya, haha.. dah.. kutunggu di kantor setelah kamu selesai kelas ya!
saya : Ng… oke…

Wah.. terima kasih “istri”ku (hahaha, dia menganggap saya “suami” dia sih).. I look forward to it..

Selamat Ulang Tahun – Happy Birthday – 생일 축하해요

Tidak tahu seperti apa hari ini akan terlewati, entah biasa saja, entah luar biasa, namun yang jelas, selamat ulang tahun untuk saya sendiri, happy birthday to me, 나를 생일 축하해요.

Anyway, my wish is just simple… I wish that, for all my friends who have graduated already, may Allah guide them finding best way in their new aspect of lifes outside the university, and for those who haven’t (inlcuding me :D ), may Allah guide us to achieve that well…
